Announcements

The National Beta Club recognizes academic achievement, promotes character and social responsibility, encourages service involvement to school and community, fosters leadership skills, and provides settings for your child to develop interpersonal relationship skills.  

We believe that participation in Junior Beta is a privilege. We believe that students are the public face of New Heights and have a direct impact on the reputation of our school.  

The goal of the Junior Beta is to help each student reach their full potential as a scholar, a leader, role model, and a community member. In an effort to reach this goal we have developed the following code of conduct. 

Code of Conduct:  

All NHMS Junior Beta Club members are expected to follow the CCSD Code of Student Conduct.  

Expectations: 

• Students are expected to always respect others. This includes but is not limited to teachers, administrators, classmates, and club members.  
• Always follow school and classroom rules.  
• Be an example of appropriate behavior.  
• Attend class, meetings, and competition practice with the intent to learn & grow every day.  

• You are expected to perform to the best of your ability in everything you do. 

  Consequences: 

• Lunch detention for rule infraction  

• 1st offense in a semester – warning  
• 2nd offense in a semester – parent contact  
• 3rd offense in a semester – member will be put on probation. 
• 4th offense in a semester -- removal from club 

• Removed from class due to behavior issues.        1st offense – warning and parent contact 

•                                                                   2nd offense – member will be put on probation.  
•                                                                   3rd offense – removal from club 

• Assigned a day in ISS  

•                     1st offense - member will be put on probation.  

•                                                                    2nd offense – removal from club

Club Requirements: 

Meetings: 

• Regular Club Meetings – the 2nd Monday of each month from 3:30- 4:30. 

• Except for the month of October, the meeting will be held Tuesday 10/10/23. 
• Last meeting- 5/13/24 

• Competition Practice – will be held on dates determined by your competition sponsor. 
• The state convention is voluntary.  

Convention: options in person or virtual  

• The South Carolina State Convention is where we showcase our talents. Members will compete individually, as a small group, and/or as a large group against other middle schools from across the state. 
• Some of the competitions are visual arts, poetry, quiz bowl, academic tests, engineering, portfolio, robotics, apparel, trading pins, performing arts, and technology. 
• SC Jr. Beta Convention will be held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center January 17-19, 2024. 

• Virtual: State Convention registration fee $25 due to Mrs. Rohner by November 3rd  

• In person: State Convention registration fee $25 due to Mrs. Rohner by November 3rd and estimated cost of members attending the convention (bus, hotel, all meals, registration) $350. Cost will split into payments to be paid to Orange Sky Charters. 

• Any student placing in the Top 5 at the state convention will get to compete at Nationals which will be held in Savannah, Georgia this coming June.  

Service-learning Hours: 

• Students are required to complete a total of at least 20 hours of service to the school and community. 

• 10 hours per semester 
• First semester documentation of hours must be submitted by December 8th. 
• Second semester documentation of hours must be submitted by May 3rd. 

Academics: 

• Members must maintain at least an 85% average per marking period. 

• If a member’s average falls below 85%, they will be put on probation until the next marking period. If the average continues to be below 85%, they will be removed from the club. 

Membership fees: 

• $45 for the first school year (nonrefundable) 

• This covers the membership cost to the National Jr. Beta organization ($25) and will not be paid again while at New Heights Middle School. 

• NHMS Jr Beta T-shirt ($20) 
• Membership fees due by August 31st (checks can be made out to NHMS) 

• Returning Members: This year we ask that you pay a $20 fee to help cover the cost of a T-shirt. 

Help Needed: 

Fundraising 

• We are currently considering a few possibilities for fundraising. If you have suggestions for fundraising or are willing to help with this effort, please speak with Mrs. Rohner. 

     Sharing of Skills 

• We need volunteers that are willing to help our students get ready for competitions. If you are available to help, please let us know. 

Service Learning 

• We are currently working on possibilities for service-learning. If you have suggestions and/or are willing to help with this effort, please let us know.
