National Fire Prevention Week October 4 - 10

Fire Prevention Week gives educators the opportunity to teach students about fire safety. This observance began as a prevention day due to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 1922, it became a week long celebration, and this week you will be given fire preventive tips to promote Fire Prevention in your community. The key message for this year is "Hear The Beep Where You Sleep."

Monday: Students should encourage parents/guardians to post emergency numbers by all telephones in their homes.

Tuesday: Ask your parents to install smoke detectors on every floor of your home and help parents test detectors monthly.

Wednesday: Check your home for fire hazards and repair as needed.

Thursday: Make sure you have a safe fire escape method for all situations. Smoke detectors are beneficial but you must have an evacuation plan.

Friday: Never use water to put out an electrical or grease fire.
